The Slick Where We Stand

By Andrew R. Duckworth

“Do not look where you fell but where you slipped.”

African proverb
Why this great turmoil thrust upon
The shoulders, weighing down the soul
In the weeds?
Oh, but the misdeeds!
Dwell on the mistakes long enough
And one will become the mistake.
But an examination
Of the routes we take
Can lead to revelation.
Why dwell on devastation?
Because it is the most obvious,
Getting up with gritted teeth
And seeing the demon of our hands,
Rather than the slick where we stand.
