In Regard to Voltaire…

By Andrew R. Duckworth

“Do not blame God for creating the tiger – instead, thank Him for not giving it wings.”

Ethiopian Proverb
Pangloss was the apparent fool
For instructing young Candide
That we live in the best
Of all possible worlds.
Oh, Voltaire, how wise you were
But yet how wrong.
You made Pangloss to appear foolish,
Even when his premise was wise.
Perhaps the world could be better,
But the world we wake up to
Is the only one we know,
The only one we can know.
We must cultivate our own garden
In more than just one respect.
