Original Sin

By Andrew R. Duckworth

We chose in the garden,
Divorce papers drawn.
A half truth
Is the most deceptive lie
And that lie sank in,
Pride birthed and growing.
And then we chose
To touch the heavens,
And then we chose
To devour the heavens,
Erase the past wisdom
And replace warmth
With frigid cold.
We beat our chests
When we declared
That there is no god
And peered at the stars
With amazement
That nothing led to everything.
But the divorce papers
Were never signed
As God waited patiently.
