Poolside

By Andrew R. Duckworth

In memory of every new wave song I’ve ever heard (The Best Music).

Miami in the backyard,
But it’s not a scorcher yet,
Just a break in the rain,
A pleasant day.
Toss the flamingos in the water,
Make them hold up our weight,
Squawking while we wait
The day away.
Deer out by the creek
Could not be bothered
By our presence
Behind the cast iron fence,
Grazing on some low-hanging twigs
As we watch,
Amazed as if we
Had never seen such things,
But I’m surprised
They aren’t fazed
By the amount of noise
Coming from the speakers,
Some 80’s music
That will never die.
Makes me picture being
On a speedboat near Miami
In a pastel jacket
And some long hair,
And linen pants
And a nice pair of shades.
A flock of seagulls
Might swing by
And beat their wings
So hard a beat plays.
