Phrases (in Off-Rhythm)

Andrew R. Duckworth

The words I woke up to
Are not the words of yesterday,
Different phrases,
A sea of sound
That can’t be bound
By time or by place.
The waters change
And rearrange
Until I find it kind of strange.
Let me cook,
The book doesn’t write itself-
The words aren’t born
Upon the shelf.
A person with the rizz
Gets down to bizz-
Applies the words
Just like a wiz
And there it is!
Idea on page-
Soon to be center stage
And all the rage
At local book shops-
A staple of the age.
And often phrases change-
Words and minds unbound by chains.
Someone says it
Then we say it,
Authors of the whole new lanes
Of conversation,
Not degradation,
Just new means of conservation-
Old meanings meet new phrases…

The words I woke up to
Are not the words of yesterday,
Different phrases.
