Andrew R. Duckworth

In the morning twilight,
Thoughts pour in that are unique-
Unique to the time of day,
Like reasons for existence,
The hows and whys,
Reflection-
It’s quiet and noisy-
Quiet for the mind
Influenced by the sounds
Of nature waking from slumber.
I look to the morning song bird.
Does it ask the same questions?
Or is it all pure instinct?

I once read a study about crows,
That they actually have dialects.
A crow was transported
Across the Mississippi River
And was outright rejected
By all the crows there.
They determined that
The crows couldn’t
Understand its
Language.

Wouldn’t pure instinct
Push against language barriers?
What do crows have to discuss?
Perhaps like us, they ask
Important questions-
The hows and whys,
And determine some
Are not worthy
Of knowing.
