Retreating from Total Control

By Andrew R. Duckworth

Deer Valley, Utah from a deck in the mountains.
To have the view with no concern
For the way the overlords burn
Sacred trusts and freedoms high
And forget what I’ve had to learn.

To have the view with no regard
Of “convenient” digital ID card
And take it in with a soft sigh
Forgetting getting back is hard.

I would retreat here to this place
Where land has scars on its face,
Scars of perfection running by
Where nature leaves a holy trace.

But tyrants always creep inside
ensuring their power’s solidified.
