Musica Italiana

By Andrew R. Duckworth

I fell into an operatic pool
Filled with voices past and present
Filling the air around them
With diamonds of culture
Spanning for decades, centuries.
Pavarotti, Bocelli,
Leave alone the controversy-
I took both with me proudly.
They told me to come back to Sorrento
And I haven’t yet.
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia
Naples is but a stone’s throw away
And the waters calm
With a pleasant breeze,
Voices carrying the lyrics
Of the past into the present.

I was lost in a concert
Sung in Italian- cantare!
And it swept me from here to there,
Enveloped me with family origins.
I wonder if my ancestors
Ever visited the opera
If they were so fortunate.
Ricordo le storie della mia famiglia.
