Racing Sunrise

By Andrew R. Duckworth

Twilight hills and mountains
In the New Mexico desert
Carrying morning dew on the dead.
No lights this time of morning
Except for the casino off the road
And Albuquerque up ahead.
Approaching civil twilight
And we’re racing off for Utah
Among the cliffs of yellow and red.
There’s that bright pearl
Sending off its rays over the peak,
Garnering the ground with spread.
There are miles left to go,
Miles left to go on the trek.
