Sacred Argument

By Andrew R. Duckworth

Look at the words that are written,
Those of generations before,
The ancestors of ancestors,
Inking on scrolls the sacred words-
Delivered by the highest
Through the brave and the chosen.
Observe the clever scholar,
His hand and mind at the ready
To dissect a language of a culture
He knows little of,
We know little of,
The way of the words set
In a tongue tied to time.
Watch how the words change,
From this character to that,
From this phrase to another,
To convey the message.
The message remains,
But what if the phrases
Commonly used at a time
And the time is lost to us
While we aren’t paying attention.
Note the way they argue,
The scholars who have labored
And now stand front and center
At the table of Truth
Because language was lost
At such great a cost.
