American Family

By Andrew R. Duckworth

I watched a family once
At a restaurant—where else?
Mom was quiet,
Dad was quiet,
Kids were quiet-
Kids were quiet.
And if one could imagine
That their hands were free
Of the tool of hypnotism,
One might imagine
They had been born with no mouth-
Apparently rendered obsolete.
