When they stripped liberty from the liberty driven (a villanelle)

When they stripped liberty from the liberty driven
The world became a place of darkness and cold.
We must do more with the time we are given.

Some say that liberty still shines bright,
Although, the cracks began to unfold
When they stripped liberty from the liberty driven.

With many failing to see freedom’s light
And the unrealized dreams of fathers growing old,
We must do more with the time we are given.

Some say the fading away of liberty is only slight,
But those with hands to grasp broke the mold
When they stripped liberty from the liberty driven.

With those who stole threatening with fists to fight
Because many now refuse the story they’re sold,
We must do more with the time we are given.

If only wise and just folk can do what’s right,
Because they said that we must do what we are told
When they stripped liberty from the liberty driven.
We must do more with the time we are given.
